2022 reading recommendations

(because smol traditions ground me, i like to reflect on what i've read in a given calendar year. here's what i wrote in 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018.)

i read 38 books in 2022, a number that bemuses me given there were weeks during which i couldn't bring myself to pick up a new one. how the hell did i top my 2021 stats? (not that it matters because, for me, reading is about sipping slowly, savoring, but i beg the q nonetheless.)

perhaps i've gotten better at eking out pages in liminal times and spaces. riding the bus to work briefly shielded me from my usual career and life obligations, and i read with such focus that i have considered taking transit Just Because to recreate these optimal conditions. my audiobook consumption continued to crescendo, which allowed me to read while walking, eating, and Beyond.

i feel hard pressed to pick favorites, so i'll list the books that i bestowed with four or more goodreads stars (out of five):

i've hyperlinked my reviews for each of the aforementioned titles, But Wait: There's More, on my goodreads profile. :')

time for a perspective check! (i remain indebted to carrie tian's 2018 book list for this segment.) of the 38 books i read this year,

  • 27 were written by women (~71%, down from ~82% last year),

  • 18 were written by people of color (~47%, down from ~65% last year),

  • 7 were written by queer folks (~18%, up from ~15% last year),

  • 2 were published before 2000 (~5%, down from ~9% last year),

  • 18 were read by me as audiobooks (~47%, up from ~15% last year), and

  • 4 were read by me as works in translation (~11%, up from ~9% last year).

my only 2023 reading hope is to let my random ephemeral fascinations guide my selections.
