Zettelkasten is a “slip box” that contains zettels or "slips". These slips can be anything:
Thoughts that do not have a definite origin (loose ideas)
Review of a journal article
Review of a webpage
A webpage with notes
A book notes
Images with notes
This list is not exhaustive but an indicative.
A note can in turn be:
A fleeting note
A permanent note
A connector note
A fleetiing note does not have a parent, it is an orphan idea that may nor may not be linked to something else. A permanent note on the other hand is one that is linked with some other note. A connector note can be used to connect two ideas. Each note will have the following elements:
An ID for the note usually in the form of a timestamp: YYYYMMDDHHMM
A tag or a hashtag #tag to indicate what is the topic on which the note is written
A backlink or where it is linked from and a forward link where it is linking to
A reference as to what source is this note about (a journal article, a book, a film, audio file, video file, ...)
Content of the note
Well the content of the note will be a simple one topic. So one idea is one note and notes are all linked up one with the others.
Finally, the way the system is organised is like as follows:
An index that will have links to EVERY note in the system
A reference library that will contain the full text of the source materials (like books, journal articles, reports, videos, audio files, ...)
The notes themselves are going to be atomic
Notion is a web based app that can be installed wherever you want it to including in Linux (via flatpak, or other sources), Windows, and Mac. Notion works on the basis of databases and you can fill in practically any type of information you want there.
So, here is the workflow:
We can type or push anything from the web to Notion to a master notes database
The primary key of the database, when clicked, will open up a note that can be populated with content
Each note can be an atomic piece of information
Each note has ID assigned automatically, tags can be fields in the spreadsheet like format, similarly links can be inserted
Each note also has a reference URL
