guiding advice for 2023, from me to me (2022 annual review)

2022 was a fulfilling year, but as the Doist blog put it, "Thinking is great, but writing is even better."

  • In 2022, I fully read 3 books and semi-read about 5 more. I received a raise at work and completed 3 projects.

  • I travelled back to Vancouver thrice, and found my way to Europe and Asia. I visited 1 new country, Norway, and explored more of 4 countries I'd been to before.

  • I logged 8 hours for my PPL, but finished 48 hours of ground school.

  • I did my CSM, and am halfway through my PMP course.

  • The games I played the most were Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon Arceus. Notable mentions include Bear & Breakfast and Kirby & the Forgotten Land.

  • I had music going for 42,505 minutes, and my top song was Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes).

  • This year, I realized how much I like the movie theater and how I think movies are getting better. Top Gun: Maverick has entered the running for my favourite movie and I continue to enjoy everything that Miles Teller is in. My top artists were Taylor Swift, OneRepublic, Train, Ariana Grande, and Macklemore. Nothing much has changed.

  • I saw Passenger, Macklemore, Imagine Dragons, and Maisie Peters in concert.

  • I'm a top 5% language learner on Duolingo! My streak is currently at 593 days, and I'm learning Japanese. (I was top 3% in 2021...)

  • My daily phone chores include Duolingo, the NYTimes Mini Crossword, and posting on originalcoriils while I'm in Japan. I'm also writing a lil each day in my Some Lines a Day journal.

  • I worked at big TED!

  • Work-wise:

    • I felt organized and accomplished putting together findings into a deliverable on Notion.

    • I feel like I challenged myself with new and difficult conversations by being a mentor for the first time.

    • I experienced what it's like to plan, conduct, and synthesize research from unfamiliar cultural markets.

    • I'm satisfied with the flexibility I had this year to work from home, from the office, from abroad, from across the country, when I worked best.

    • I learned about my enthusiasm stamina at work and how to best foster it to keep going.

    • I hit 6-figures!

  • Productivity-wise:

    • I feel like I prioritized social outdoors events but could do better in solo outdoors events. I want to spend more time learning to skateboard and continue kayaking.

    • I feel like I did as much of my PPL as I could've this year and want to prioritize it even more next year.

    • I wrote 3 personal Substack posts and 2 Con Lavita Substack posts. Last year, I also wrote 3 personal Substack posts but they were mostly in Spring, and this year's was mostly in Fall.

  • Physically:

    • I kayaked a bunch this year! 4 times I think around the Toronto Islands?

    • I bouldered 10 times this year! What a feat! I did my first red(?)

    • I ran to the water once in a joint SMART goal with Gena!

    • I snowboarded way more than I ever have before.

    • Let's get more sleep next year — it's incredible how much consistent 8 hours of sleep can do for your mornings.

  • Financially:

    • I was never going to save more than I did last year since I mostly lived at home then. But I still saved a significant chunk this year and I'm happy about that.

    • I'm also glad about how free I felt to spend while on vacation this year. I think I also invested in some bigger items that I needed and will be able to use for years to come (new iPad, new clothes, etc.).

    • Next year, I want to save and invest more.

    • I'm proud of my credit score!!

  • Relationship-wise:

    • I'm so happy about the time I've been able to spend in both Vancouver and Toronto, continuing to foster my relationships in both. I'm also happy about the time I've been able to spend with my family, both on vacation and at home!

  • Learning-wise:

    • I cannot wait until I have my PMP — that's a big goal for the first half of 2023.

    • I want to read more! The goal is once again, 12 books!

WNRS asked some good questions for some personal reflection but I really enjoy the last one, "who did you become?" It took all year, and I became more grounded in my skills, what I can offer, and how I like to feel in control of my time. I definitely became more introverted but I was always on the cusp anyway. I became more opinionated, even though I often won't argue with yours. I've become a student pilot, snowboard instructor abroad, kayaker, boulderer, and new friend to many.

Looking forward to 2023,

Word of the year for 2023? Lean. To lean into the unknown, new opportunities, milestones, new goals, new friends, new places, spontaneity.

(Not-so) secret wish for 2023: Pay rent in different places, take advantage of your seemingly endless energy.

What do I currently envision for 2023?

professional development. Next year, I will draw the most energy from my surroundings, books, and people around me. Next year, I will be bravest when I go all into the next chapter towards the third spaces concept. Next year, I will say yes when someone asks me to tag along. Next year, I advise myself to spend more time lingering on words than scrolling past words. Next year will be special for me because it's another set-up year, personally and professionally.

Next year, let's:

  • Write at least one Substack per month

  • Edit 1 compilation video for each month I live abroad

  • Prioritize work-affiliated learning, growing as a project manager and people manager

  • Continue becoming a better snowboarder

  • Balance spending time on my own and with others

  • Balance travel on my own and with others (do some travel hacking?)

  • Read 12 books

  • Attend 2 weddings

  • Live in Paris

  • Become a pilot

  • Love lots

Kudos to YearCompass for the additional inspiration.
