Seafaring

I don’t remember not knowing how to swim. Just like breathing, I guess.

(There’s a theory that newborn babies take to water so naturally

Because they’re still used to the womb’s amniotic fluid.)

I always feel more at ease when near water. You remember my story

About my family’s yearly beach trips, right?

We’re descended from seafarers. Our ancestors were island people,

Natural navigators on outriggers, plying their routes across the ocean

With the stars as their guide. And on that night I kissed you

And saw starlight in your eyes, I wondered if the same constellations

That guided our forefathers so long ago somehow led me to you.
