Week 25 2020

First weekly update on reading.supply and also the first week into Phase 2 of the circuit breaker measures in Singapore. It's been great so far, and I've been leaving the house a lot. Went climbing twice so far, and manage to tear some skin off my hand the second time so I won't be back anytime soon :(

Unfortunately, going out more also means less time spent on maintenance on the weekends, which is why I'm writing this update on a Tuesday instead of Sunday. I find it really interesting how much I underestimate the time spent on commuting, and how fast time seems to fly when I'm out of the house. It just all seems much slower when I'm sitting at home just staring at the computer for the whole day.

Progress updates

Not much that I worked on last week. Spent most of my time on my own private writing and of course, going out and finally getting to meet my friends.

  • Presented at a board meeting at Cyber Youth Singapore. It was a novel experience for me, nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time. I received lots of great feedback on my presentation and was also quite enthralled by how efficient the meeting was, being planned in advance. I hope our other meetings could be as efficient. We also had our first online Town Hall event.

  • Completed Seveneves, and wrote a review on it. It was a great book, despite the shortcomings of the plot. It expanded my imagination and made me yearn for future experiences and perhaps even life in space.

  • Published some of my thoughts on the first day of Phase 2, the evening after a much-anticipated climbing session with some friends. I felt that the return to “normal” life would bring about some drawbacks, such as the loss of the constant atmosphere of introspection that comes with living in isolation. I also discussed how it isn't exactly “normal” life anymore, since there's just enough of a difference (masks and check-ins) to throw me off.

  • I also celebrated my birthday! I'm now into the third decade of my life, and it brought about a lot of reflection on where I've been and who I wanted to be in the future.

An optimistic week

I decided to try out something new last week by setting a theme for the week in advance, instead of trying to extrapolate it from the journal entries at the end of the week. My journal entries and writing from that week would surround this theme, and I would try to link any explorations I do back to the theme of the week.

The theme I set for myself this week was optimism. It was a good theme, I had been feeling really down in the weeks leading up to this one, and choosing optimism helped me to acknowledge those feelings, while shifting my thinking towards how to build a better future for myself. The announcement that Singapore would be entering Phase 2 also occured this week, which couldn't have aligned any better with optimism.

While there isn't any conclusion or summary to this theme, I think that I have been happier over the past week, through reflecting on how I wanted to be optimistic towards the future and taking the first steps towards making it happen.

What's in store next week

The theme for this week will be reconnecting. As the people in Singapore emerge from lockdown, I want to reconnect with my friends and family, to meet them face-to-face and enjoy their company. I also want to reconnect with my values, to gain a deeper understanding into who I am and want to be.
