Week 26 2020

This week flew past much faster than I anticipated. Visited the Taskade office twice to help set things up, had a few more climbing sessions and walked up to the peak of Mount Faber yesterday with some friends. Didn't get as much work done as I had hoped to clear (which means more work on the weekends) but meeting my friends and experiencing nature again was well worth it.

Some part of me still wishes that the circuit breaker measures lasted a little longer. I've lost the routine that I had adopted to cope with not going out, which also means that the deep, reflective mood that I had has also disappeared. It's tougher to perform any introspection when there are more distractions, like packing for the next day at night and planning outings.

Progress updates

Really not much done this week.

  • Much of my time working on Taskade this week was spent on the data structures at the core of our platform. This includes our document representation and collaborative editing transforms. It was a pretty slow week, most of it spent on writing tests and figuring out Slate's old API. Hopefully this work will come to fruition next week when we make the final push towards deployment.

  • Read through most of We Need to Talk by Celeste Headlee. It was a decent read, and I could already see some benefits from employing some of the techniques in the book. I felt like the principles behind having good conversations were pretty simple as well, so it's really up to the reader to practice them well.

  • Found a new climbing gym called Fitbloc in Singapore with amazing facilities like a co-working space and a gym! Excited to go back there for more climbing soon.

Reconnection

The theme for this week was reconnection. It was about rebuilding the bonds with my friends and family after the circuit breaker, and also reconnecting with many other areas of my life. While it didn't play out the way I had imagined to, I think that I managed to surround my thoughts around this theme pretty well.

On Monday and Tuesday, I reconnected with the working culture I had established in the past with my coworkers. We hung out at a cafe and just had fun cracking jokes whilst working on our project together. On Wednesday, I did some reflection about my relationships. On Friday and Saturday, I reconnected with the current issues and news in Singaporean society, like privilege, racism, elitism and some politics.

I think that this theme was a successful one, and perhaps I will bring it back in the future when I start to feel disconnected or isolated from the happenings around me.

What's in store next week

The theme for this coming week will be focus. I want to train myself to be more focused on what I have to get done, and try my best to avoid distractions along the way. Be it in conversations, while doing work, while playing games and even while eating, I want to be more present and avoid trying to multi-task and instead just focus on focusing.
