One of two things will happen

One of my friends had a near death experience recently. She was in Iceland driving the main road around the country, and the car she was in flipped across two lanes of traffic and into a ditch.

She and the driver crawled out of the car, both shaken but unscathed. The car was totaled.

When I talked to her a few months after this, she was a changed woman. Her near death experience had prompted her to get her shit together and focus on the things that mattered to her, and nothing but those things.

For her, this took the form of her music. She had been working on original songs for the past few years. She was running a passive income business related to this on the side, and did web development for a startup on top of this. But now it's all about her music. She's due to come out with an EP in early 2019 and she'll be ramping down on the other projects to focus on getting listeners.

"What I realized about doing art, creating something of your own, is that one of two things will happen."

"Either you'll die. Or you'll eventually make enough progress towards that thing and you'll make it happen."

Crucially, when she put it like this, it didn't even occur to me that giving up was a secret third option. In her worldview, it wasn't.
