Beyond the moonshot

People can set their minds to magical, seemingly impossible ideas, and through science and technology, bring them to reality. That then sets other people on fire, to look at the impossible, and see that it might be accomplishable.

No one knew how to build an airplane; no one knew how to fly an airplane. Those aviation pioneers built as they went, and here we are. People may feel oppressed by the many challenges out there in the world, but everyone is a slave to something. Choosing to be bothered by the impossible. If we become afraid of taking big risks, we stop inspiring people. We stop achieving the impossible.

As 2021 rolls in, I reflect on how I came to be who I am today. There is a giant question that surrounds my purpose in life, and I’m okay with that. All I know is that I want to change lives for the better, and I wanted to understand why I felt that way.

Growing up, my parents would always tell me about their time in Vietnam, when it was the ‘pearl of Asia’, to the war, on towards landing in Canada and building a life for myself and my brother. They grew up in extreme poverty, with my mom being the second youngest of 9 other siblings. Food was scarce and life was dependent on living day by day. The simple pleasures during that time consisted of watching the street-side food stalls and smelling the aromas as it wafted across the road.

Then the war changed everything. My dad became a boat person, going over to Australia for a couple of years to seek refuge. Then eventually, he was admitted into Canada, which was when he sponsored my mom over to rebuild their lives. Being fortunate in an unfortunate situation, they worked their lives back up again, for my and my brother’s sake for a better life and future. An impossible ideal, and in taking that risk, their son is writing about how it ignited his fire.

I want to help rebuild someone’s life, even if it’s a single person’s life because that person can become someone with a similar goal like myself and a chain reaction can occur. Moonshot thinking is to propose a radical solution using disruptive technology, and in a similar sense, I want to change someone’s life.
